The Secret to Raising a Talkative Cat

Have you ever encountered a cat that seems to speak as much as humans do? My brother adopted a cat named Walker from a shelter, and he has become the most talkative cat I’ve ever known. Walker was always a bit talkative, but with time and training, he has become exceptionally vocal.

Walker’s communication skills are so impressive that he almost seems humanlike. He doesn’t just meow; he meeps, chatters, and murs, making a variety of noises.

His ability to chat back when we talk to him has endeared him to our hearts.

Here are some tips on how to encourage your cat to be more talkative, just like Walker:

1. Meow back when your cat meows at you. This simple act can lead to a conversation and encourage your cat to meow more. Some cats might be confused at first, but if you persist, they may start to see meowing as a way to communicate and get what they want.

2. Identify what makes your cat meow and meow back, rewarding them when they do. Every cat has different triggers for meowing. Some might meow to announce they are using the restroom, while others might have different reasons. By understanding these triggers and responding with meows and rewards, you can encourage your cat to meow more.

Remember, training your cat to meow more is a commitment, as it can be hard to reverse once they become more talkative.

If you’re ready for a chatty companion, these tips can help you on your way.

Some of my cats like to meow at me when they demand food as it’s nearly time to eat.

If you want more meows, you can encourage this by meowing back and then giving in. Pay attention when they meow for something, meow back, and reward them.

Other cats rarely meep or meow and use other methods like reaching their paws out or touching my face. It’s adorable. If you want to combine this with meeping or meowing, see if your cat makes a sound during these moments and reward them by giving them what they want.

This becomes a trigger where your cat sees meowing as a button to get what they want. The more you meow and oblige, the more they see meowing as communication.

Remember to only use meowing back in the contexts you want your cat to meow. If you don’t mind meows in any setting, meow back every time. If you do mind in some contexts, it may be hard to turn off and you might have created a ‘monster’. In this case, tone it back and stop giving in.

If you want your cat to be a cute meow machine, keep chatting with your cat, give in to what they want, and they’ll quickly learn that in certain contexts, if they meow and are chatted with, they’ll get what they want.
