I’ve had an unexpected journey with my cat family, starting with just one and at times reaching as many as seven under one roof.
During various periods, I’ve cared for five cats at once, along with two additional ones when my brother moved in with his own cats.
Managing such a large group was challenging, especially with the cats not always getting along.
I had to juggle their schedules, deciding who got let out and when, making it a difficult but surmountable task.
Now, I have three cats, and my brother has three, after he took two from the initial five.
Sadly, one of his cats passed away due to a congenital heart defect.
For a year, I had four cats, but the kitten under my care never warmed up to me.
She preferred my brother and his husband, eventually moving in with them where she became more cuddly and bonded.
With four cats, I found it hard to meet their needs, unable to cuddle or play with them enough.
I use an automatic feeder, the PetSafe Healthy Pet Simply Feeder, and the Catit Senses Food Maze to space out feedings and keep them busy.
With more cats, it becomes increasingly difficult to manage their individual needs.
For instance, I like to give my three boys water mixed with kibble twice a day, which was exhausting with four.
The last kitten didn’t eat with the others, requiring constant attention to ensure she consumed enough calories.
With just three cats, I can manage better, but even then, they all want to be on my lap when it’s cold outside.
I have found the perfect balance with three Velcro kitties, each with their own unique personality. They are all lap cats, and the addition of a third cat has not diminished their snuggly nature.
Maintaining a balance with three cats allows me to give each the attention they deserve without feeling overwhelmed. I believe a fourth cat would stretch my time too thin, but with three, I can manage the chores and care they need.
Grooming is one area where I wish I had more time. I have two long-haired cats and shave them myself, which can be quite a task. However, I’ve learned to make the process less stressful for them.
I regret not using my Furminator more on my short-haired cat, Avery, as it could help with his hairballs. The Furminator Long Hair for Cats Undercoat Deshedding Tool is the best brush I’ve found for shedding management.
Vet visits are not too burdensome, especially since my indoor cats don’t require them frequently. Having two cats for a long time also felt perfect, closer to ideal than four. Thus, I believe two or three cats are the perfect number for me.
I prefer three cats as the ideal number because it provides companionship and comfort, even if one were to pass. It also allows for the gradual introduction of a new cat when ready.
Amazon Basics Large Cat Activity Tree is a great addition to keep my cats entertained.
Avery, who was once a single cat, showed initial anxiety towards a new cat but has since become very comfortable with them. Now, the three cats get along so well that they snuggle and play together without my presence.
It’s heartwarming to see them interact, especially Avery, who has become more active and playful with his companions. Having companions has been very beneficial for Avery, who was once a lazy cat.
Adjusting to a new family member can be challenging for any cat, especially after years of being an only cat. However, through a process of patience and effort, my cat was able to adjust and develop a relationship that exceeded my expectations.
I now believe that every cat should have a buddy, as they can provide comfort and companionship, especially when one inevitably passes away. I think having three cats is ideal – two to keep each other company and one to be introduced when I am ready.
Having three cats is not much more work if they get along, and I am confident in my ability to manage their coexistence, even if they are not the best of friends. The magic happens when they become good friends or even best friends. For those considering having three cats, I’d love to hear your thoughts. Is it too many, just right, or too few?
